‘Legally Blonde’ at IHS a Comedy with Heart—and Lots of Pink

From jump-roping prisoners to singing sorority sisters, Legally Blonde, the Musical, at Ithaca High School April 4-6 is non-stop entertainment, as fun for parents as for teens. It’s a romantic comedy with heart—and lots of pink.

When Elle (Keara Byron) gets dumped by boyfriend Warner (Noah Elman), her sorority sisters (Elisheva Glaser, Lisa Podulka, Maddie Vandenberg) convince her that she can win him back. She follows Warner to Harvard Law School and with the help of new-found friends Paulette (Jewell Payne) and Emmett (Brendan Coyle), Elle manages to succeed in law school—despite the vindictive Vivienne (Cali Newman)—and help wrongly imprisoned fitness queen Brooke (Erin Hilgartner). Along the way Elle proves that a blonde doesn’t have to act dumb to succeed.

Based on the 2001 movie, Legally Blonde was nominated for seven Tony Awards when it premiered on Broadway; it also won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. “The songs are pure fun,” says music director Nathan Parker. “And the cast has so much talent and enthusiasm I wouldn’t be surprised if people come back to see the show more than once.”

The choreography, by Laura Preston, is so high energy that the dancers were given home exercises weeks before rehearsal began so they could get in shape for the show. “The cast is more than ready,” says Preston. “They’re going to give the audience a great time.”

Director Robert Winans says they were very lucky to enlist Tyler M. Perry to design the set. “It’s a difficult show to design. Since it’s based on a movie, there are lots of demanding scene changes.” Perry is a professional lighting and scenic designer based in New York City; his work has been seen at the Kitchen Theatre Company, Hangar Theatre, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, and elsewhere.
