Record Number of ICSD Musicians Earn All-State Band Honors

The New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) has announced that thirteen Ithaca City School District Musicians have earned positions in the 2011 Statewide Middle School Honor Band, the largest number of students from any school district in the state. Two additional students have been accepted as alternates. Fairport (9), Williamsville (8), Niskayuna (7) and Great Neck (6) round out the top five.

The students from Ithaca include: Madeline Hause, Katie Henderson (flute), Keara Byron, Zsofia Szegletes (oboe), Caoilinn Andrews (clarient), Andrew Newman (alto saxophone), John Peterson (trumpet), Max Mollenkamp, Daniel Erickson, Rishi Verma (trombone), Sarah Cohn-Manik, Joshua Tokman (tuba), Matthew Lin (percussion), Gabriel Miller and Annie Barnett-Young (alternates). All of the accepted students are members of the Boynton Middle School Concert Band. See photo.

“I am thrilled that so many students from our school have put themselves in a position to participate in this enriching experience of lasting value,” said band director, Michael Allen. Acceptance to the statewide honor band is based on performance scores earned at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Zone 3 Solo and Ensemble Festival held in May each year.

The participating students will attend the NYSBDA Conference on March 4-5, 2011, at the Windham Hotel in North Syracuse, NY. They will rehearse with the other members of the statewide honor band and perform a concert at the NYSBDA convention at 4:00pm on March 5th.
