Honoring Frank Mazurek, former Ithaca High School Orchestra Director

We mark, with sadness, the passing of Frank Mazurek on December 31.

Mr. Mazurek was the former Ithaca High Orchestra director, remembered for his excellent leadership and many years of service to so many students. Mr. Myers, current IHS Orchestra teacher, recalls, Frank was such “a wonderful, giving man who gave a big part of his life to the orchestra. I’m sure there are many alumni and other supporters of the arts in Ithaca whose lives were touched by him, and would want to know of his passing. …. He brought a deep devotion and commitment to the orchestra.”

Upon his retirement from Ithaca High, a scholarship was established in his name called the Frank Mazurek String Award. His impact is still felt at Ithaca High. The boosters are pleased that Mr. Mazurek got a chance to tour the new Ithaca High School Performing Arts Center this fall.

In his obituary, it states, “He was deeply devoted to his many students; he took great pride in them and humbly said, “I got more out of the kids than they got out of me”.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan 8, 2011 at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 402 N. Aurora, Ithaca.
