2021 Saltonstall Teacher Residency - Announced

Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts Partners with Fine Arts Boosters to Host Teacher Retreat: Teachers Announced

The Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, in partnership with the Fine Arts Booster Group (FABG), an affiliate of IPEI, is offering a creative retreat for teachers of the Ithaca City School District (ICSD) and other districts in Tompkins County during the February and April school breaks. The program is designed to provide residency-type retreats for local teachers in creative writing, photography/film/video, and painting/sculpture/visual art. It is totally free for teachers selected through a lottery system.

Ithaca City School District teachers and staff selected for 2021 include:

Naomi Raimon, Lehman Alternative Community School, academic support teacher- visual art Jon Raimon, Lehman Alternative Community School teacher – creative writing Alexandra Hartley, Lehman Alternative Community School humanities teacher – visual art Gwen Daniels, veteran substitute teacher at Boynton Middle School and other schools – visual art and writing

The teachers will be provided with a five-day, four-night retreat with private accommodations, studio space, and hearty, chef-prepared vegetarian dinners. These retreats are modeled after Saltonstall’s summer residency program and provide our local teachers with uninterrupted time and space in which to focus on their own creative endeavors.

“We love this program,” says Lesley Williamson, executive director of the Saltonstall Foundation who created the teacher retreats in 2013. “It’s a way for us to support a group of local artists and writers who don’t often get the chance to be artists and writers. We are so pleased to offer this opportunity to local teachers with the help of the Fine Arts Booster Group.” Lesley notes that Saltonstall has embraced COVID-19 protocols and the nature of this retreat allows space and safety, though communal meals will be missed.

FABG works in partnership with the Ithaca City School District (ICSD) to support and celebrate all the arts for all the kids. The Fine Arts Boosters strive for increased student access and participation in arts programs. The boosters believe the arts – music, dance and visual, literary and theater arts – are a central part of every child’s public school education. Visit www.fabgithaca.org.

IPEI is a not-for-profit organization that believes the education of every ICSD student is enhanced through community connections and support facilitated by IPEI for students and teachers through engagement, collaboration, gifts, and grants. Visit www.ipei.org.

Ongoing FABG initiatives include mini-grants to teachers, student scholarships, producing virtual performance booklets for ICSD secondary schools’ concerts and drama productions; strengthening community connections; fundraising; Play It Again, Ithaca (collection of used musical instruments for use in the schools); Saltonstall Arts Colony retreat for teachers; and various efforts in support of arts in the schools.

FABG is open to all K-12 staff, parents, students and community members and is concerned with all arts areas. Join the group and volunteer to work on goals – communication, grant giving, development, community connections, and instrument recycling.
