Boynton Band News - Concert and Awards

March 10, 2010, Concert Features World Premieres

The Boynton Middle School Concert Band and Symphonic Band will give the world premiere performances of two new works for band at the Festival of Music Concert on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 7:00pm, at Boynton Middle School. Ithaca College Composition Majors Christopher LaRosa and Drew Schweppe, students of Sally Lamb, have collaborated with Michael W. Allen, Director of Bands, to present these new compositions. Mr. Schweppe has written a programmatic work entitled, “Lazy Storm Breakdown”, for the 6th grade Symphonic Band members. Mr. LaRosa has written a contemporary work entitled, “Magellan’s Quest”, for the 7-8 grade Concert Band members. Both works were written as part of a new Composer Outreach Program between Ithaca College and Boynton Middle School. Similar projects are proposed to take place annually through this new initiative. The Composer Outreach Program falls within the expectation that band activities at Boynton Middle School will constantly provide students with meaningful enrichment opportunities of lasting value.

In addition to the new works, the Concert Band will perform “Waves of the Revolution”, “Chorale and Shaker Dance II”, and “Malaguena”. The Symphonic Band will perform “Air and Allegro”, and “Fanfare and Dance”. The Boynton Jazz Ensemble will feature soloists Archie Cowan on “Sunday Drive” and Andrew Newman on “Swing Shift”.

The concert is free and open to the public.
