Open House and Community Celebration of Renovated ICSD Arts Building

The Ithaca City School District (ICSD) invites the public to an open house Sunday, November 7 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. to celebrate the renovated Ithaca High School Performing Arts Center, 1401 N. Cayuga Street. The entire community is welcome to tour the building addition and improvements funded as part of the district facilities bond projects. The new teaching and performing spaces can be viewed led by student volunteers. Musical performances are scheduled for 2:30pm and 3:30pm, and a brief ceremony will occur at 3:00pm celebrating the completion of the project.

Kulp Auditorium has been a community resource space since its 1960 construction. Now, the renovated building will offer more to district students and community groups. The auditorium has a new sound and lighting system, refurbished seats, wider aisles, and expanded back stage space. Adjacent to the auditorium are new dressing rooms, a box office, concession area/ lobby, rest rooms, costume area, and scene construction shop.

Space for teaching in Building A has expanded from one classroom shared by all to designated classrooms for orchestra, band, choir, dance, music theory and theater. Each classroom contains a teacher office and resource area. Performing spaces will include the large Kulp Auditorium and a smaller “black box” theater/classroom with flexible seating. The entire complex is now air conditioned and features energy-efficient lighting systems. The building entrance is newly handicapped-accessible and features new trees and outside seating. Ithaca High Advanced Placement Art students have designed art work which will be etched into the entry window glass.

The complex was renamed the Ithaca High School Performing Arts Center by the Board of Education on October 12, 2010.

“This renovated facility will serve our students for many, many years. The increased and improved teaching space opens up the possibilities for more fine and performing arts classes for students. This project means so much for education and for our community as a resource,” says Fine Arts Booster Group President Martha Frommelt.
